| Habitat
for Humanity has been active in Kitsap County since 1992. The
first affiliate began in North Kitsap in 1992 and two years later,
an affiliate began in South Kitsap as well. In 1999, the
two affiliates decided that their efforts would be stronger if
they consolidated into one Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County.
The international Habitat for Humanity movement began in Americus,
Georgia, in 1976 with a visionary named Millard Fuller. Walking
away from a successful career in law, Fuller, together with his
wife Linda and a group called Koinonia Farms, founded Habitat
with the conviction that every person deserves a decent place
to live. He believed that communities can come together
to make this possible for their neighbors in need.
To date, Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County has housed 52 families. Affordable
housing is an increasingly urgent need in Kitsap. Habitat for
Humanity is committed to helping meet this need by increasing the number of houses we build annually in a sustainable way.
