Women Build, nationally underwritten by Lowe’s, puts tools into women’s hands to fight poverty housing.  Women make up 50 percent of Habitat’s volunteer force, yet often they account for less than 15 percent of workers on the construction site.  The Women Build program is meant to encourage the involvement of women in the construction of Habitat homes.  Not only does the Women Build program enable women to discover for themselves that they can build Habitat homes, but each Women Build helps to expand the capacity of the affiliate to serve more families through networking, fund raising opportunities, an expanded volunteer database, and new leadership.

Kitsap Habitat’s first ever Women Build was built in 2008.  Women Builds provide the opportunity for women from all walks of life to come together to provide a family with a simple, decent, and affordable place to live.  Throughout the process, women participate in all facets of building a Habitat home, beginning with fundraising, to recruiting volunteers, and ending with the actual construction of the home.

Women Build 2010

Women Build 2010 will begin May 15, 2010, as one of the 11 homes that make up Cornerstone Place, Kitsap Habitat’s second neighborhood development off Sylvan Way in East Bremerton. While fundraising continues, the combined efforts of the Women Build team and a new Lowe's grant make it possible for construction to begin. This is the second Women Build Project for Kitsap Habitat.

The project will incorporate several ‘green’ building techniques, among them:

Modified advanced framing using a pre-cut lumber package to reduce costs/waste,

  • Radiant floor heating,
  • Cantilevered trusses to accommodate better insulation in the attic space,
  • On-demand water heater,
  • Environmentally-friendly paints and caulks to reduce off-gassing and potential allergens,
  • Ceramic tile and laminate flooring to reduce dust and allergens, and
  • Energy Star-rate appliances.

We are also seeking Energy Star certification for this and all future homes we build.

This is a great opportunity to learn in every way. Be at the heart of the build; join us for this exciting project! Bring your hearts, hands and enthusiasm, and we’ll teach you all you need to know!

Watch weekly volunteer e-mails for more details on work dates and/or contact Sheila for more information.
